GlassDoor, a job-search website, recently carried out an in-depth study into our lunch-break habits. The survey, which sought the opinions of more than 2,000 workers in the UK, revealed that the average lunch break lasted only 31 minutes. In the same study, many of the respondents admitted that some of their break was spent carrying out other work-related activities. Still others said that they did not take any break-time at all, instead eating at their desk. 

John Lamphiere, a spokesperson for GlassDoor, said: "Fewer people have the time or the inclination to take a long lunch break anymore." He added that the survey found that many employees use part of their lunch-break to go online, run errands or shop, with the actual eating of lunch being 'squeezed in there somewhere'. 

Expressing concern about the shocking results of the GlassDoor survey, nutritionist Rhiannon Lambert said that rushing lunch can often have negative impacts on a person's overall health. These negative impacts can include a feeling of being bloated, which occurs when air becomes trapped in the stomach when food is hurriedly chewed and swallowed. Another fact pointed out by the nutritionist was that people often opt for unhealthy food which can interfere with the body's system of balancing blood glucose, leading to slumps in energy that affect mood and productivity.
