Eggs: Tasty AND Healthy!
With Easter on the way, we thought it would be a great time to talk about eggs. Though the chocolate kind are tasty, they certainly can't be described as healthy! We're talking about actual eggs which, as well as tasting great, also come with a great many health benefits.
Every day at Jack's Ovens, we get through quite a lot of eggs. As well as cooking them to your liking and serving them on a fresh, fluffy barmcake for breakfast (with or without sausages and bacon), we also use them as a key ingredient in several of our other delightful dishes such as our delectable egg-and-cress sandwiches, which are a big hit every lunchtime.
Each and every egg we use is hand-selected by our award-winning Head Chef Daniel McKnight. In common with many of the other ingredients we use, our eggs are locally-sourced.
So, what are the health benefits associated with eating eggs? Here are just some of them...
- Eggs are a complete protein source, containing no less than nine amino acids essential in the human diet. They're also a powerhouse of vitamins and minerals, containing selenium, phosphorus, folate, zinc and iodine along with vitamins A, E, D and B12.
- The many nutrients found in eggs include betaine and choline, both of which are associated with a healthy heart. A Chinese study, which involved nearly half a million people, proved that eating one egg every day as part of a balanced diet reduced the risk of both heart disease and strokes.
- The aforementioned nutrient choline plays a key role in numerous functions of the brain, including memory. Choline is an important nutrient for everyone as is an essential component used by the body to form cell membranes but it is especially important for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding as it contributes to a child's normal brain development.
- The vitamin A found in eggs helps in the proper maintenance of vision. Within the yolk, the carotenes lutein and zeaxanthin help to prevent the formation of cataracts, as well as slowing down macular degeneration in older people.
- Eggs are high in protein, which makes them more filling than fats or carbohydrates and gives them a high ranking on the Satiety Index (a measure of how full a particular food makes you feel after eating). This means that you will feel fuller for longer, helping you to avoid reaching for unhealthy snacks.
