Hot Chocolate & Carrot Cake!

You probably don't need an actual reason to enjoy a steaming mug of hot chocolate and a slice of divine carrot cake but we've got one for you anyway; the 31st of January will be National Hot Chocolate Day AND National Carrot Cake Day! These tasty treats make an absolutely fabulous pairing and you are invited to visit Jack's Ovens to indulge yourself in both. 

National Hot Chocolate Day
It is believed that the first chocolate drinks were created by the Mayan civilisation more than 2,000 years ago. Made by crushing cocoa seeds and mixing them with water, the drink was spiced up with the addition of a few hot chilli peppers! In the late 16th century, Irish physician Hans Sloane created the sweeter drink that we enjoy today by mixing the cocoa with hot milk. 

Cadbury's is perhaps the nation's favourite chocolate brand and is certainly the best known. In 1824, when John Cadbury established his business, hot chocolate was in fact the very first product he sold. Here at Jack's Ovens, we are proud to use genuine Cadbury's hot chocolate, which we mix with fresh, hot and fabulously-frothy milk to create a mouth-watering drink that is perfect for chasing away those winter blues at any time of day. 

National Carrot Cake Day
Carrot cake is an evolution of a medieval dish which was then known as 'carrot pudding'. Evidence suggests that the dish was made using a hollowed-out carrot, which was then filled with cream, breadcrumbs, nuts and raisins. During these times, sugar was difficult to obtain and thus very expensive; the natural sweetness of carrots provided an ideal alternative. 

Though sugar is plentiful today, that has not always been the case. During the Second World War, sugar was strictly rationed and so the Ministry of Food recommended using carrots to sweeten a variety of dishes, including the now-famous and much-loved carrot cake.
