Fries, Glorious Fries!

If you're a regular reader of the Jack's Ovens blog, you'll know that the most recent addition to our range of state-of-the-art equipment is an air fryer. This has allowed us to extend our sumptuous menu with brand new items like wedges and baked potatoes. The latest addition to our air-fried menu (and we can't believe this wasn't the first thing we thought of) is... wait for it... fries!

Yes, everyone's favourite hot and crispy snack is now on the Jack's Ovens menu and is here to stay. Judging by how popular they have already been with our customers, we'll be continuing to serve up heaps of gloriously-golden fries either on their own, as a side dish with other favourite menu items and, for those who fancy a real treat, smothered with a lip-smacking selection of delicious, decadent and downright dirty toppings.

It seems likely that fries were a Spanish invention, as Spain was the first European country in which the potato arrived from New World colonies. Indeed, one of the earliest mentions of 'papas fritas' (fried potatoes) was made by the Chilean soldier and writer Francisco Núñez de Pineda while he was visiting Spain.

Fries are a notoriously unhealthy snack but that only applies when they are deep-fried in large quantities of oil or fat. When cooked in an air-fryer, a process which does not require the addition of any fat or oil, fries are much less unhealthy, not to mention being far tastier! In fact, the National Institute of Health carried out an in-depth study into the use of air-fryers, with the results showing that the process reduces the fat content of food by up to 75%.

Air-frying is also much kinder to the environment than traditional frying as it uses a significantly lower amount of energy. Even the fries themselves are more sustainable: an article published in 2022 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Journal, which looked at the environmental impact of more than 57,000 different foods, revealed that french fries have an extremely low environmental impact in comparison.

One of the best ways to enjoy fries at Jack's Ovens is to make them dirty! We take a freshly air-fried portion of our delectable fries and cover them with a selection of toppings. The most popular topping so far has been cheese and peppercorn sauce and we're looking at adding new toppings to the selection: if you have got any ideas then we would love to hear them so do not hesitate to send us an email or reach out to us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram!

We make fries to order so that they are fresh, crispy and piping hot. For this reason, it's best to pre-order by giving us a call. We look forward to seeing you soon!
